Spello – Between limestone and flowers
Ancient city charm in the Jewel of Umbria

Spello, Umbria/Italy (2018)  – You don't really know where to look and point your camera first when walking through one of the most picturesque and characteristic ancient towns of Umbria, Spello. The medieval town in the province Perugia, in Italy's green heart, is not only known for its ancient charm but for its Roman "leftovers", stone arches and the city wall with its gates and also for its flower festival "L'infiorata", held each year on the Thursday after Corpus Christi, 60 days after Easter. This festival converts Spellos streets and steep alleys into huge flower pillows. Visitors get to appreciate the efforts of the Spellanis, who put out countless planters with blooming flowers on stairways, patios, squares, house walls and streets, also long after the flower festival. All year round they soak the whole town into flowers, making the city to their "Spello in Bloom".
Spello is also called the "Stone Town" because of its appearance. Pink and white limestone dominates the look wherever you go. The buildings, narrow alleys, arches, squares, churches and stairways profit from this soft look, giving the town this extra touch. Spello, a neighbor town of the famous Assisi, has a rich history and still is today entirely surrounded by ancient Roman walls, including the three gates "Porta Consolare", "Porta di Venere" and the "Arch of Augustus". On the highest point of the gorgeous town shines one of the coolest Roman "leftovers"– the "Roman Arch".
